Fascism Needs Cowards is a mixed media collage built on playing cards from a souvenir deck purchased in Russia. Fifty United States Senators — each one who voted to confirm Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense — appear in black and white, their portraits edged in crimson and marked with a single word: COWARD, spelled out in ransom-note letters. They are joined by three figures who earned a different designation entirely: Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, and Vladimir Putin — the criminals whose crimes required cowards to succeed. JD Vance, who as Vice President cast the tie-breaking vote, stands among the cowards. The Russian cards are not an artistic choice made for effect — they were brought back from Russia, and they are the foundation on which every face in this piece literally rests. This work is personal and it is political, and it makes no apology for being both. It is a record. It is a reckoning. And like the structure it depicts, it was built to be seen.
